I’ve read quite a bit about reverse washing recently so I thought I’d give it a go and let you know what I think. My hair is currently prone to oiliness but with the right products it’s manageable. It’s also fine but there’s a lot of it, and if I’m not careful it can become very flyaway and static. Therefore I’ve been using oil-reducing shampoos followed by moisture-boosting conditioners to try and get the balance right!
I tried reverse washing with two different product ranges that I know my hair responds well too; Concoction and Josh Wood. For those unfamiliar, reverse washing is pretty much as it sounds; you condition your (wet) hair, leave that to absorb for a bit then shampoo. The logic being that conditioner is tricky to wash out fully, so most people are left with a film of it on their hair that weighs hair down, so doing it this way you’re ensuring there’s no trace left but you’re still conditioning your hair.
I’ve always seen hair care in the same way I see skin care; you cleanse to remove dirt and grime then you moisturise not only to boost moisture levels, but also to replace any lost moisture from cleansing. Therefore this approach of moisturising then cleansing didn’t resonate well with me, but I thought I’d give it a go nonetheless.
Hair is definitely left feeling thicker, fuller, cleaner and with more movement. It also lasts longer in between washes which is handy. The two negatives for me are firstly that I think my hair needs a bit of weight from conditioner as of course it was static central when I brushed my hair, and secondly it didn’t have that silky feel that I love from well conditioned hair. Therefore I think it’s something I will continue to do but I will also mix it up with standard washing too to try and get the benefits of both types of hair washing. It’s definitely an interesting idea though, so if you suffer from flat or oily hair then why not give this a go?
I’ve never heard of the term “reverse washing”, but funnily enough, I have done it before.
I don’t tend to use conditioner period because I have very fine hair, and there isn’t much of it, so any conditioner tends to way it waaay down. Plus, my hair is also quite oily, making it just crappy in every way.
However, I might try this on a more permanent basis and see what results I get.

I feel your pain as your hair sounds very similar to mine! It’s worth trying; if you don’t like it then maybe try it every other wash and see how you get on xx
I have been doing this, but only at the roots, I condition the ends as usual after I have washed it so that I don’t get that ‘flyaway’ nonsense that my hair likes to do so much of!
My hair is horrendously flyaway prone; I’m currently trying to counteract it with styling products xx
