Maybelline are one of those brands who I’ll always have not only a soft spot for, but a real respect for too. I perceive Maybelline in the same light that most people view Rimmel; a high-street brand that consistently delivers high performing products at reasonable price point.
The consequence of this brand affinity is that I end up splurging whenever they release something new (I bought pretty much every shade of their Colour Tattoos when they originally launched) which is how I’ve quickly ended up with three shades of the Eye Studio Master Smokey.
Maybelline Eye Studio Master Smokey is a chubby pencil available in five shades. I purchased Violet, Grey and Chocolate, and the two remaining shades are Black and Navy. I first purchased Chocolate, gave it a whirl, then decided to purchase a couple more as I do love a plum liner and you can’t go wrong with a smokey grey pencil for extreme dress down days.
These are little dreams comes true if you fancy a smokey eye but are either rubbish at achieving the blending technique, or just don’t have the time yet want some smokey definition. You apply the pencil in the normal way – I tend to go quite messy because it doesn’t really matter – then at the other end of the pencil is a medium/firm smudger that you can use to work the product in and out until it’s blended exactly as you like it. The colour payoff for these pencils is really good, but the smudgeability is also great, making them very versatile. In the pictures in this post I’m wearing Violet in all of them, and I’ve used a bit of a medium grey shadow on the crease to add a little more shadow to the look.
I mostly use these just on the upper eyes blended out for a pop of colour and definition, but I have also worked them around the whole eye for a seriously smokey look; this approach works brilliantly with the Grey if you love that charcoal finish but find black a bit too harsh.
In conclusion, we have another great Maybelline product that happily and comfortably rivals much more expensive brands. Maybelline Eye Studio Master Smokey are available now for £5.99 from Boots. It’s worth keeping an eye out as they were in the 3for2 deal recently so no doubt they will be again.
