So YSL do surprisingly good skincare, who knew?! I’m horribly judgey when it comes to beauty as I tend to find that most brands are either very good at makeup, or very good skincare, but very rarely both. There are, obviously, exceptions to the rule, and whilst I can’t categorically state that YSL skincare provide that very exception, I can say that what I’ve tried so far has left me very surprised, particularly as I’m such a fusspot when it comes to SPF, so the new YSL Pure Shots Airthin UV Defender SPF50+ was a big surprise and today I’m going to tell you all about it.
As a general rule, I kind of hate SPF (even though I still use it religiously, because it’s absolutely essential) as I find it tends to interfere with everything in its path; makeup gets oilier, skincare gets bittier, so my kind of SPF needs to slot in effortlessly, providing a very high SPF and ideally also adding in some skincare, as why waste that extra step.
The YSL Pure Shots Airthin UV Defender SPF50+ actually does all of these things! Firstly, believe the name, “Airthin” is a very good heads-up on the consistency as this is a very thin consistency, I’d say like a cross between an emulsion and an essence, so it spreads very well, doesn’t leave a thick layer of sun-protecting goo on your face and it plays well with skincare. It also contains a few skin-loving goodies such as citrus peel and Niacinamide, the latter of which I was nervous about as my skin does not like Niacinamide, but so far there have been no additional breakouts of signs of irritation.
I did find this to pill a little under makeup, but this was mostly when I went a bit too heavy with buffing in my base, and I often find that to be a problem with SPF regardless of the product. As long as I’m not OTT with my application, then this plays well with makeup, provides a hydrating base and gives a fantastically high level of SPF at 50. It’s a gentle formula and I think it would suit most skin types other than the very oily. I also really love the bottle it comes in, so it’s win for me and this is product I’ll be reaching for when we eventually get some more sun at some point in the next 18-24 months…
