For the first time in my life, I have an actual hair care routine – this means I’m a fully fledged adult now, right? Earlier this year, my hair started falling out; not in giant clumps, I just started becoming more aware of how much was in the plughole and hairbrush after use. I’ve always loved my hair (rubbish skin, great hair) so the ideal of losing it was really upsetting. It turns out it was a pretty common symptom of Gallbladder disease which is also something I had pretty badly this year, which you’ll know, if you read my moaning on various social platforms, but since that all got sorted my hair has stopped falling out and started to thicken, thankfully. I’ve always taken my hair for granted, but this year I started to really tread carefully and these are the things I swear by:
Please just get yourself a Manta brush, okay? Regardless of whether you think you need it, I promise you your hair does. The Manta brush is basically a much kinder, softer, gentler version of the Tangle Teezer – it’ll tease your tangles but it won’t break your hair in the process. I’ve already reviewed this in full here so I won’t launch into the backstory, but when I had my aforementioned hair issues, this became an absolute lifesaver for gently brushing my long hair without adding to the problems. I have three – one in the bedroom for everyday use, one in the bathroom for working through in-bath products and one for ensuring an even application of hair care products. Prices start at £25, them here – link.
I start every hair care routine with a brush through with a Manta, followed by a double wash, deep condition and then the finishing products. The first product I use is the Redken One United Multi-Benefit Treatment, which I apply all over my hair and comb through. I mainly use this because it’s a heat-protectant that doesn’t add any weight to my hair – I have fine hair but a lot of it, and now it’s particularly long I need to use products that aren’t heavy. This provides a whole host of benefits (25, apparently!) including conditioning, strengthening and helping prime hair for styling, plus a little goes a long way. Currently on offer for £15.60 here –link.
Next is the Philip Kingsley Elasti-Styler 5-in-1 Treatment, which, if pressed, I would probably say is my favourite product for hair care as it just makes such a noticeable difference, whilst building on/working with other products in the routine. I apply this to the lengths and ends o my hair. It mainly works to strengthen and condition hair, and I kind of see it as the styling version of my all-time favourite hair care product, the Elasticizer, as it’s just so reliably good. Again, it doesn’t add weight, instead it just provides a bit more strength and gives my hair a better chance of not breaking when brushed and heat is used; if this had heat-protection added then it would pretty much become my HG product. It’s £34 here – link.
The final layer of my hair care routine is the Philip Kingsley Bond Builder Split End Remedy, which I apply to the lower third of my hair to add a little more strength to the parts of my hair that are struggling the most, the ends! My hair is about half way down my back now so the ends have been around a while, and as I’ve only been able to have one haircut in the last 12 months, they literally need all the help they can get. I like the idea of this product as it’s like a smoothing, strengthening finisher that’s designed to seal the split ends temporarily (thus stopping any further splitting) which is exactly what my hair needs if it’s going to survive until my next cut. It’s £26 here – link.
QVC UK do some great Philip Kingsley sets that include both the above products (plus the Elasticizer) so they’re well worth checking out – find the brand page here.
My final step is to use the Manta to work everything through from roots to ends to ensure an even distribution, I then use my Dyson Hairdryer to dry my hair, alongside the Manta. The Dyson should be included in this post since I purchased it as another part of my hair care routine, but I have lots to say about it, so it needs its own post! Coming soon…
Disclosure: all PR samples apart from the Dyson hairdryer.
I’ve used that Redken treatment before and really liked it. The Dyson dryer is a game changer! x
