I was very kindly sent the JOVS Blacken DPL Photorejuvenation Skincare Device last year and I was so excited to share my thoughts with you guys as it’s such a fantastically exciting device (I genuinely don’t think there’s anything else quite like it – at least, not that I’ve found!) but things kept getting in the way of me using it consistently, so I wanted to wait until I had a chance to use it regularly for a longer length of time so I could check with any possible issues, but I’m happy to report there are absolutely none, and this is just an all-round awesome bit of beauty tech that I’m thrilled to be sharing with you! I’ve tried to provide a comprehensive review, but as always, if you have any questions or would like me to clarify anything, please feel free to comment and I’ll do my best to help.
I won’t go into excessive detail regarding the science behind the JOVS Blacken DPL Photorejuvenation Skincare Device (mainly because I can’t, because I’m not smart enough to understand it, HA!) but I’ll give you a basic overview of my very limited comprehension of how it works. It’s designed to improve the overall texture and tone of skin, utilising Dynamic Pulsed Light, which is an advanced version of Intense Pulsed Light that operates at a specific wavelength that targets problem areas of skin, particularly issues with melanin and texture. If you’ve heard of Photo Facials then you’ll know the technology, as the JOVS Blacken DPL Photorejuvenation Skincare Device is a tool that allows you to take advantage of such technology in the comfort of your own home, in a quick and easy fashion that really does work/
The JOVS Blacken DPL Photorejuvenation Skincare Device is a handheld device that comes with a mains adaptor, a sturdy storage box and various instruction leaflets. As soon as it arrives, straight out of the box, you can tell it’s a fancy product, as it really is beautifully presented. There are three settings on the device: Brighten Mode for full face rejuvenation, Redness Mode for targeted treatment of facial redness, and Whiten Mode, which allows you to zone in on particular areas of concern, such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (marks left from breakouts) and ice-pick scars. I have plenty of both, so I’m an ideal candidate for this type of treatment!
The JOVS Blacken DPL Photorejuvenation Skincare Device is very easy to use. There are two buttons, one that allows you to turn it on and the other that allows you to move through the settings. When depressed for a few seconds, the power button will also allow you to administer the laser without having to repeatedly press the button, so you can just focus on moving the device over the area to be treated; as long as the head of the device stays in contact with the skin, the laser will keep administering treatments. You are also provided with safety goggles as the laser is very bright. You don’t need any skills to administer the treatment, and I actually do mine sitting on my bed with handheld mirror in front of me.
Twice a week, I do a treatment that involves all three settings: I start with a full face using the Brighten Mode, I then move to the Redness Mode where I target my cheeks, chin, and the broken capillaries around my nose, then I finish off with a Whiten Mode which I use on the dark spots of pigmentation and any areas where there’s excessive texture. The treatment is entirely pleasant and there’s no pain; you can feel it very mildly on the strongest Whiten Mode, but it never reaches anything even close to uncomfortable; so much so, in fact, that I wasn’t expecting such impressive results since you feel so little happening on your skin! There is definitely heat, but the device is designed brilliantly with a sapphire cooling surface that, as the name suggests, keeps the head of the device cool and protects the surrounding skin from any potential heat damage. The instructions recommend following with a sheet mask; I have done this a few times but I don’t always have time for it and I haven’t noticed any difference on days when I don’t use a mask, I just follow with gentle, hydrating skincare instead. I also have started using the Whiten Mode on its own a few extra times a week in areas of stubborn pigmentation, and if I have time, I like to follow a treatment with a red light treatment using an LED Light Therapy Mask, but again, this is not absolutely essential and you can just treat and go; it’s a very quick treatment, so it won’t be hard to find time to fit it in. It’s recommended to be used a couple of times a week, too.
Straight off the bat, I haven’t noticed any difference to my ice pick scars, but these are deep scars that have been there for years and I think that it’ll take more than a few months to make any real difference to these. What has absolutely blown my mind is how quickly and effectively this lifts pigmentation, and when I say quickly, I mean after a couple of treatments you can see a noticeable difference. I had one very nasty, dark purple mark on my cheek that I’ve been targeting with this device and it’s now much more pink, much less neon and much, MUCH less noticeable too.
As someone who has battled with not only adult acne, but all the fun that comes with it (namely, scarring) for most of my adult life, it feels phenomenal to finally find a device that is not only brilliant at targeting acne scarring – something I know so many of us struggle with – but it does it quickly, painlessly and gently too! The skin does not have to suffer; instead, this brilliant bit of beauty tech promises to reduce acne marks and that is exactly what it does. Fantastic! I really do believe that we are finally out of our “skin attacking” phase where we throw everything at it (retinols, acids, harsh exfoliators, intensive and invasive treatments, etc) and instead are leaning more towards products and devices that will not only provide results, but provide them without causing additional stress on the skin, so if you’re feeling the love for protecting your skin barrier and finding kinder alternatives for results-driven treatments, the JOVS Blacken DPL Photorejuvenation Skincare Device will fit wonderfully into your routine.
The JOVS Blacken DPL Photorejuvenation Skincare Device is available now. It is normally $699 but it’s currently reduced to $529 and you can find it here – link. However, I have noticed that the PRO version (which promises to be even more effective and is apparently especially good at tackling visible pores) is also reduced down to $559, so for $30 more, it might be worth investing in the fancier version…although, obviously I can only vouch for the original, which I am very happy to do as it’s amazing! You can find the PRO version here – link. It’s also well worth checking out the product pages to see some fantastic before and shots, as well as a more comprehensive breakdown of how the device works.
