Charlotte Tilbury recently made her first foray into fragrance with the Collection of Emotions line, containing six scents themed around particular feelings: we have Love Frequency (woody floral), More Sex (musky sandalwood), Joyphoria (warm floral vanilla), Cosmic Power (spicy amber), Calm Bliss (fresh aquatic) and Magic Energy (woody fresh) and during the exact week that I received a diagnosis of both Fibromyalgia AND Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, I received a surprised delivery of a bottle of Magic Energy – I definitely LOL’d.
The whole collection is so on-brand for Tilbury and I love the fact that she’s just taken a concept and unashamedly ran with it. The inspiration is a little camp, much like the bottles and the presentation, but the vibe is fun and exciting and it genuinely offers something a little bit different. I also love the fact that you can buy 10ml bottles to try the product before committing to the full-size, plus there’s also a discovery set, and if you buy a full-sized bottle you get a 1.5ml sample included, so you can try the fragrance without opening the main bottle, therefore keeping the option to return it if you decide you don’t like it. These are little details that I think make fragrance a lot more accessible for everyone, particularly as fragrance is so incredibly personal; you can read all the blurb to try and decipher if you’ll like the way something smells, but you’ll never know for sure until you actually smell it.
Having said all of that, I kind of knew that Magic Energy wasn’t going to be a fragrance I got on with as I’m not a big fan of woody scents and the note of myrtle oil is what hits me immediately with this fragrance, which is something I love in candles but not in personal fragrances; I am a total Basic Bitch when it comes to scent, give me a floral or vanilla scent and I’m all set. I’m 40 now, so that isn’t going to change, but I can appreciate the beauty of Magic Energy without wanting to wear it myself. I’m currently eyeing up both Joyphoria and Love Frequency.
The top notes are bergamot oil alongside the aforementioned myrtle oil, then at the heart you have cypress, jasmine sambac and seaweed absolute, all of which sit upon the woody base notes of cashmere wood and palo santo accord, ambergris accord and olibanum resinoid, the latter of which I believe is more commonly known as frankincense. The opening is bright thanks to the bergamot, then that incense-like smokiness arrives thanks to the myrtle oil and the eventual frankincense. It’s a well balanced fragrance that settles nicely, but also very, very long-lasting; the brand promises 18 hours of wear and I think that is entirely possible!
The whole Charlotte Tilbury Collection of Emotions range is available now, with prices starting at £20 for the 10ml. Find the full range here – link.
