I count myself as a bit of an LED Light Therapy aficionado, since it’s something I’ve embraced from the get-go as someone with long-term issues with adult acne, so when CurrentBody launched their LED Light Therapy Mask Series 2 I approached it with a healthy dose of cynicism, since what can be done to LED that isn’t already available? Turns out, quite a bit! CurrentBody have taken their iconic Series 1 LED Light Therapy Mask and upgraded it so much, that I would genuinely recommend getting your hands on this as soon as possible – it is quite literally my favourite LED mask ever and I am so, so impressed! I’ll go into a lot more detail below, with a comparison of the Series 1 and Series 2 masks that’ll hopefully help you make an informed decision as to whether you need this upgrade or not. You do though, seriously…
The four biggest upgrade elements that I think are noteworthy are the new style head straps (so important for something you use daily), the huge upgrade in fit and shape, almost double the amount of LED lights and, arguably the most significant upgrade of all, the addition of the deeper near infrared.
Starting with the head straps which are now much wider and come with an additional head support that allows for a far more even placement of pressure, so if you’re like me and find LED masks a bit uncomfortable – especially across the nose – then the Series 2 has addressed that so well, so the centre of gravity is more evenly distributed so you don’t end up with pressure spots; I had just come to accept that LED use meant a sore nose, but not so with the Series 2!
Whilst we’re on the topic of comfort, the mask design is absolutely brilliant. I have a long face a big nose, so those masks promising to fit all face shapes (I’m looking at you FAQ 202!) tend to still be a problem for me, but the Series 2 has an incredibly smart design that has a divot in the chin that will expand or contract to fit the shape of your face, which ensures full coverage for all face lengths with the added bonus of more coverage just under the chin, which is an area that really benefits from LED treatment but doesn’t usually get addressed in more traditional face masks.
Now is a good time to mention that each of the CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask Series 2 masks comes with paperwork, a Veritace® NFC card, that basically demonstrates the testing the mask went through and how each individual mask will provide results. I get the need for this as it’s another level of reassurance that you’re investing in a product that meets a very high standard of development, but I have such faith in CurrentBody products that I presume that’s the case, without needing additional paperwork. Still, it’s handy to have for those who are less familiar with the CurrentBody Skin range.
Finally, the most exciting addition is the changes to the LED lights themselves. The CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask Series 2 has considerably more lights than the Series 1 (236 bulbs rather than 132) and three clinically studied wavelengths. The first two – at 633 nanometers and near-infrared at 830nm – are featured in the original mask (they have apparently been upgraded, but other than considerable more bulbs I can’t find any more info than that) but the exciting addition is the deep near-infrared at 1072nm, which is pretty much underheard of in currently available LED treatments and is as very cool development.
The number of nanometers very roughly correlates to how deep the light can penetrate the skin; so, for example, blue light works superficially at around 450nm (give or take) whereas red light goes a bit deeper at around the 650nm mark, then near-infrared goes even deeper at the 800 – 900nm mark. So a penetration depth of 1072nm is impressively deep, going up to 10mm into the skin, therefore speeding up collagen production in a timely and effective manner.
I have been using CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask Series 2 for a few weeks now and I really am totally in love with it. It’s so comfortable and easy to use (10 minutes a day) and I am definitely seeing an improvement in the overall quality of my skin. I have extremely reactive skin and I have found that red light has caused breakouts for me (an unusual result, but that’s my skin for you) but I haven’t had that issue with the Series 2, and I think it might be because it sits so well on the skin, although that’s just speculative and I have no actual idea why!
If you want to see it in action, I shared a video on TikTok which you can find here. The CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Mask Series 2 is £399, so exactly £100 more than the original and worth every single penny. I also have a great discount code to share with you – SASCHABEAUTY – which brings the price down to £359.10, so definitely worth taking advantage of!
You can find the Series 2 here.
