ZIIP recently launched their ZIIP DOT – a device designed to treat all elements of acne and breakouts (read my full intro here) – and the main question people are asking is: if I have a ZIIP HALO, do I need a ZIIP DOT too? I think this is a really valid question and it was definitely the first thing I thought of when the DOT first launched, so having tried both devices, hopefully I’ll be able to answer this and give you an idea of whether you need the ZIIP DOT or not.
First up, let’s have a quick look at both devices: the ZIIP HALO is a facial toning device that utilises both microcurrent and nanocurrent to provide a cohesive treatment that addresses a number of issues via different programmes that you use through the phone app, so you can decide what your problem areas are and address them accordingly. The HALO gives both long-term and immediate benefits and the range contains a selection of different gels so you can really personalise your routine.
It’s no secret that I love my HALO and I use it very consistently. I find it has helped with so many skin concerns and has given me a much healthier complexion all round. I use it three times a week and I do the All Inclusive treatment, followed by the Jowls treatment, then I used to finish off with the Problem Solver but now I finish off with the DOT.

The ZIIP DOT is a far more specialised device designed with the sole intention of treating, reducing and preventing breakouts. Much like the HALO, it utilises both microcurrent and nanocurrent to target all the different issues that come with breakouts, encouraging the bacteria to the surface and killing it off, whilst also treating inflammation, calming skin and promoting a healthier skin barrier.
I have been using the ZIIP DOT for a few weeks now and it really does work SO well; you can just tell it was designed by someone who knows how breakouts work as it’s just such an easy device to use and I love that you can either spot treat individual spots, or do a longer treatment all over the face to prevent any potential breakouts sitting under the surface that haven’t become visible yet. When I’m broken out (from stress, usually!) I use a full treatment at the end of my HALO treatments and then use the spot treatment on any obvious breakouts, but when my skin is behaving, I use the full face a couple of times a week to just keep everything calm.
So what is the difference between the ZIIP HALO and ZIIP DOT and do you need them both?
First up, the HALO is more of a faff to use than the DOT as it needs to be synced with the app and the whole thing feels a lot more time-consuming than a quick spot treatment with the DOT, which doesn’t use an app – you just do a quick press on the power button for a spot treatment and a longer one for the full face. I don’t always have the energy/motivation to do a full treatment when my skin is playing up, so being able to just power-up and go – and be all done in a couple of minutes – is very handy.

The second difference is the design, as the circular shape with the larger, flatter electrodes make it so much easier to treat active breakouts – either individual spots or patches of spots – which I think is a significant difference as, whilst this can also be achieved with the HALO, it’s so clearly a device designed to do it all, whereas the DOT is just for breakouts, so it’s designed accordingly and is therefore much easier to zone in on problematic areas.
The final difference is the fact that the DOT uses both microcurrent and nanocurrent for the treatment, whereas the Problem Solver treatment in the HALO app only uses microcurrent. Now, whilst this is great as both types of current are amazing for breakouts, I do think there is an argument to be made that they could just add a treatment to the app for breakouts that includes both currents, but it’s still worth mentioning nonetheless.
To summarise, if you are someone who never breaks out then obviously you don’t need the DOT, and if you occasionally breakout then you could just stick with the HALO Problem Solver, but if you are like me and you breakout regularly, the DOT is going to help and it is going to make a difference to your skin, both quickly and kindly, with short-term and long-term benefits, making it an essential tool for anyone who struggles with stubborn acne and regular breakouts.
