There are now two members of the CurrentBody Series 2 LED face mask family, the original LED Light Therapy Face Mask: Series 2 and the newer LED Anti-Blemish Face Mask: Series 2, both of which offer significant upgrades on their Series 1 counterparts, but what are the upgrades, how do the two differ and do you need them both? For a more detailed review of the LED Light Therapy Face Mask, check out my post here.
The two main upgrades for both masks, taking them from Series 1 to Series 2, are the design of the actual mask (considerably more comfortable with better strap placement) and more coverage, which comes from both an extension to the mask itself – meaning it now hugs under the chin, ensuring the whole area gets treated – and the addition of extra LED lights; the LED Anti-Blemish Face Mask went from 132 lights to 220, whilst the LED Light Therapy Face Mask went from 132 to slightly more at 236. Both masks also come with a Veritace card that allows you to view the quality testing that your individual mask went through, but honestly this is something I’ve never really explored as I have enough faith in CurrentBody to know that they don’t muck about when it comes to their beauty tech; I think it’s a handy inclusion for those who might be new to the brand and therefore a touch more cynical, though, since it provides an added level of reassurance.
What’s the difference between the two? The LED Anti-Blemish Face Mask provides two lights at slightly more superficial wavelengths – blue at 415 nanometres (nm) and red at 633nm – so the blue targets issue on the surface of the skin, such as breakouts, whilst the red goes a tiny bit deeper to address what might be causing the problems, such as inflammation and irritation, whilst also encouraging collagen production to speed up the healing process, making this an ideal treatment for breakout-prone skin.

The LED Light Therapy Mask builds on the aforementioned targeting of inflammation and collagen production with three key types of red light: the tried and tested original red that we saw in the Anti-Blemish Face Mask that sits at 633nm, then there’s the addition of near-infrared at 830nm which penetrates the skin further to encourage speedier cellular turnover, then finally we have the extremely exciting deep near-infrared at 1072nm, which, as the name suggests, penetrates the furthest, reaching the deepest cells and stimulating more activity for rapid turnover. On a very, very basic level of explanation (with a whole host of scientific caveats) the larger the number, the deeper level it reaches, so blue targets the surface and red focuses more on what’s underneath.
Finally, do you need both? If you don’t struggle with breakouts then obviously you definitely don’t need the Anti-Blemish Face Mask as it would serve no purpose for you, but for those of us who struggle with problematic skin, I had to think long and hard about whether to recommend purchasing both as they are investment products that I realise not everyone can afford. However, my belief is that, if you can afford to purchase both then you should, as I feel that the Anti-Blemish Face Mask should be used as a short-term treatment to target existing breakouts, then once they’ve cleared up and you have them under control, move over the to the LED Light Therapy where you can benefit from the additional near-infrared lights, since these are the lights that will keep your skin healthy, by encouraging a more rapid cellular turnover and a reduction in inflammation, both things that will not only help with keeping acne at bay, but also speed up the healing of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation too, then keep the Anti-Blemish Face Mask for times when life gets in the way and you need to target any new breakouts.
I really hope this has proved useful, and if you plan to purchase either of the CurrentBody LED masks then don’t forget to use my code – SASCHABEAUTY – for a 10% discount on both. Find the Anti-Blemish Face Mask here and the LED Light Therapy Mask here.
