For years I’ve heard about how amazing the Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask is, yet as it isn’t widely available in-store, I haven’t had a chance to pick up my own jar. I was browsing eBay recently and the mask popped into my head, so I ordered one, tried it out, and here are my thoughts! The Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask is a spot and oil fighting, deep cleansing mask with a strong, minty scent. Ever since my pregnancy I’ve had a bit of an aversion to mint (and ginger), especially when in products, but in this it’s actually very pleasant; fresh, refreshing and a lot like toothpaste.
I’m having yet another stress-related breakout at the moment, so I added a couple of drops of salicylic acid to the mask before applying it. It’s a pretty traditional spot-fighting mask in that it’s quite tingly (think mint rather than acid) and it has a clay-like feel that will almost certainly upset very dry or sensitive skin. Kaolin is the second ingredient after water, so it’s definitely a clay mask with the added benefits of both zinc and sulfur, two ingredients that dry and heal spots really well, although I think the mintiness is just there for fragrance – I could be wrong though!
I was surprised by how many spot-fighting goodies this contains, especially considering it’s price point, but what it lacks is the gentle, calming formulation that ideally needs to sit alongside the above ingredients to keep all skin types happy. My skin certainly looked considerably fresher, smoother, cleaner and calmer after use, so I’d say that if you’re on a budget and you need a decent mask to treat spots and oiliness, this is a very good option.
