The minute I read about the Boujee Bougies candle range I knew it was something a collection I would love. Created by Pia Long (Perfumer) and Nick Gilbert (Creative Director) the Boujee Bougies candles contain five unique fragrances, each with their own theme and personality. The whole range is available as both minis (60g for £25) and full-sized (220g for £55).
Cuir Culture: “a celebration of the bold beauty of queerness” and possibly the best candle name ever, this rich and sexy scent is built around notes of leather, cedarwood and animalic notes (don’t know what it means but it sounds AWESOME) and is a great take on a leather scent.
Gilt: another fabulous name, Gilt asks, “if the walls in a church could talk, what would they say?” Gilt really does evoke a church-like vibe thanks to the notes of amber, labdanum and aldehydes. I was in the church choir as a child and this fragrance was very nostalgic, almost alarmingly so! If you like smoky, moody incense scents then this is a dream.
Succulent: this is a juicy, green number that’s fresh and grassy which just a little bit of musk. The key notes are geranium, cactus and tomato leaf and this is a really pretty take on a green fragrance, although I would say it’s probably my least favourite of the five. Having said that, it almost seems to be the one I see covered most, so it’s clearly very popular!
Queen Jam: from my least favourite to the final two which are my absolute loves; Queen Jam is actually my son’s favourite (he walks around with the mini candle in his hand, just randomly taking big gluggy sniffs) thanks to it’s fresh and fruity scent, courtesy of rose, raspberry leaf and myrrh. I feel like Queen Jam really shows the skill that’s gone into creating such a balanced fragrance as the raspberry leaf could easily be too overpowering or hard, but the inclusion of the gentle rose allows the whole fragrance to level and become a treat for all of the senses.
Hellflower: speaking of a treat for the senses, Hellflower is probably my favourite candle ever – I’m fortunate to have both sizes of this beauty and I’ve been failing miserably at my attempts to make the bigger size last, but I cannot stop burning it as it’s such a beautiful scent! I would never have guessed that a fragrance built around grapefruit would do it for me as I’ve never been a fan of grapefruit as a fragrance note, but the addition of jasmine and magnolia turns this into the most uplifting, bright and positive fragrance that is perfect for all seasons – I will definitely be repurchasing this when I run out.
I’m so excited about the Boujee Bougies range and I cannot wait to see where they go next. They’re available now from their main website here – link – as well as at Escentual here – link.
