The May 2014 Birchbox is a collaboration with fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar to showcase the products that the magazine’s Beauty Director, Sophie Bloomfield, depends on most. As expected, it’s an impressive collection of products from some amazing brands.
This is my first Birchbox and I’m impressed with it’s presentation. I like the style of the box as well as the enclosed drawstring bag that contains the product; there’s something quite elegant about it and it feels like opening a present rather than a subscription box.
There are six products in total included in the Birchbox May 2014, two of which are full-sized. As with all my beauty box posts, here’s the contents in order of my favourites:
Imedeen Derma One
This is described on the box menu as a ‘lifestyle extra’ so I don’t know if that means it’s a bonus item, but as I’m a total convert to beauty supplements lately I’m thrilled to see these included in the box. You get a month’s supply (6o pills) which has a value of £37. Derma One is aimed at the 30+ age bracket and designed to help with hydration and radiance.
Soigne Nail Lacquer in Cerise
Soigne isn’t a brand I’m familiar with but the polish was so beautifully presented that they are firmly on my radar. The shade I received is Cerise which is a deep fuchsia shade. The sample is full-sized and valued at £11.
Philip Kingsley One More Day
I think I’ve mentioned before that I have a real soft spot for the Philip Kingsley brand as it was the first brand that got my really excited about hair care (try their volumising range if you haven’t already) so I’m always happy to receive something from them. I haven’t tried their take on the dry shampoo, but I will definitely be using this as I’ve never tried anything from them that hasn’t turned out to be fabulous. There’s 50ml in the box and the full-sized product is £13.50.
Aromatherapy Associates Revive Morning Bath & Shower Oil
Aromatherapy Associates are everywhere at the moment, and if you’re a fan of beautifully scented, gentle and effective skin and body care then this is a brand you’ll want to know more about. The reason this is lower down on the list than you might expect is because the sample included is tiny; that in itself is not a big deal as it’s an oil so chances are there will be a good few uses in it, but I can see myself having a nightmare trying to use this in the wet and slippery shower. However, I will give it a blimin’ good try! Interestingly, you apply it before a shower and then wash it off; as I don’t have anything similar in my routine I am looking forward to trying this. Included is 3ml and the full-sized product is £39.
Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real Mascara
This is another product that should be higher on my list but the only reason it isn’t is because I have it (actually I have several) so I’m less excited about receiving it. Having said that, it is in my top 3 all-time favourite mascaras so it’s definitely a welcome addition in a very dinky sized 3g tube, which full-sized costs £19.50.
Laura Mercier Face Polish
It proves what an impressive box this is when something as impressive as a Laura Mercier product falls to the bottom of the list. The main reason for me is because I’m trying desperately hard to avoid manual exfoliation with anything beaded or scratchy, so this is something that won’t get much use from me. It’s a fairly decent sized sample at 11.3g which I would hazard a guess at being maybe 3-4 uses. Full-sized this costs £25.50.
As you can see, it’s a really good edit of products that I think most people will be very happy with. The Harper’s Bazaar box appears to still be available, so if you’re keen then head here – link – for more info. The box is £10 plus £2.95.
