Hair Cut and Colour: To splurge, or not to splurge?

I had my hair done yesterday. I had a little taken off the length so it hangs just above my shoulders and I had some highlights put in to lift the colour as I went red a few months ago and whilst I loved the red at first, once it faded it wasn’t good. So about a month ago I had the colour taken out and a brown dyed over to make it look less coppery.

I dye my hair a lot and I get it cut a lot too. I get bored really easily and fall into the trap of hunting for a cut and colour that really suits me, eventually finding it, then getting bored and starting the cycle all over again. As a consequence, I’ve tried so many different salons, ranging from the cheap and cheery independents to the uber-expensive central London boutique salons, as well as the chain salons like Rush and Toni & Guy.
The thing that interest me is that, whilst I understand that we’re paying for quality
