The Nutribullet has a cult following which probably seems a little strange to the uninitiated, as on first appearances it’s just basically a bullet shaped blender; this is true, but the main reason I think so many people love their Nutribullet is because it’s a clever idea that’s been really well executed.
We all know we need to get as much goodness into our bodies as possible every day, to ensure we look and feel our very best. However, this isn’t always the easiest thing to achieve. Everyone has their own reasons for struggling to eat healthily, but for me, the big one is that I’m on my own (apart from little munchkin, who isn’t really eating enough fresh produce for it to count yet) so if I buy fresh food, I end up wasting a lot of it because I can’t eat it all before it goes off. Fresh fruit and veg is relatively expensive as it is, so the idea of spending a small fortune a few times a week to then throw half of the food away is not appealing! Enter the Nutribullet.
First and foremost, the Nutribullet is a truly handy tool for making fruit and veg smoothies and upping your daily intake of all the goodness that comes from consuming these two key food groups. The kit I have is the 12 Piece Bundle (link) which comes with everything you need to get started; the base, three different sized cups, lids, two blades and various bits and bobs to make the whole smoothie-making/blending process quick and easy. It also comes with possible the best inserts I’ve ever come across with a new gadget – a pocket nutritionist that tells you everything you need to know about the healthy things you can put in your Nutribullet, and a very comprehensive guide to the machine, with recipes, ideas, and lots of creative encouragement.
So why are people so crazy about the Nutribullet? I believe there are several reasons: firstly, it’s extremely easy to use and faff-free; you put everything you want in to the cup, screw on the blade, plonk it into the unit and press it down to blend. Then when you’ve got the consistency you want, you remove the unit, unscrew the blade and add a cup rim to drink the smoothie. There’s no mucking about with settings, then decanting your smoothie, it’s literally a case of blitz and go – they even supply lids and handles to make the cup easy to drink from. On that basis, at the very most you have three things to wash up – the blade (quick rinse under tap usually removes everything) the cup and the cup lid, handle or rim. Consequently, preparing, consuming and then cleaning-up after your smoothie is very easy, and I think this makes a massive difference to why the Nutribullet is so successful.
The general guidelines for making a smoothie are to fill the cup halfway with greens, top up with fruit, then finish with boosters such as nuts, seeds and powders. Again, it’s all very simple and no measuring is needed, which makes for another easy process. The unit itself is extremely powerful, so you don’t have to do lots of prep to fruit and veg, most of which just needs to be washed before being chucked in the cup, although tread carefully with things that have unhealthy or inedible pips that need removing first. I’m getting as much green into my smoothie as I can, and in the smoothie pictured I have spinach, broccoli, Chlorella powder from Organic Burst, then I’ve added cherry tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, pomegranates, chia seeds and more from Organic Burst in the form of their Maca Powder for energy. Most days my greens are usually either kale or spinach with as much broccoli as I can squeeze in to the cup.
The only downside I have found with the Nutribullet is a slight leakage when extracting, however, apparently this can often happen when you over fill the glass, which is something I’m guilty of! I’ve recently started adding lots of nuts and frozen fruit and veg to the mix, just to add a bit of texture and good fats.
I’m quite happy to say that the Nutribullet is pretty life-changing. Since I opened up the package I’ve been using it every day, and if you start your day with something so healthy and virtuous, you’re more likely to continue the good work throughout the day. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that I find the smoothies yummy, but they are very palatable – especially if you use coconut water in place of tap water, as this adds a slightly creamy, sweetness to the mix – and they make me feel really, very healthy; in just a few weeks of smoothie-drinking the difference is very noticeable. Nutribullet isn’t cheap, but it’s built to last, easy to clean and use and designed to take up very little room. The Nutribullet kit I have is from Ideal World for £99.99, or you can take out a 2 or 3 month flexi-pay, all of which can be found here – link.
